were do I get the kong at

PetCo ,Petsmart , even Target too. The black ones are strongest. Baby blue is for puppies but we gave ours a back one. It is the only toy that lasts for out rottipitt mix. I put small treats with peanut butter. And if u get the ball there are small chicken meatball treats that fit perfect in the whole. My Diesel will throw a tantrum waiting on the kong with peanut butter!!Loves it!!

Kong's are great...just make sure that you purchase the proper size for the dog. We have 2 small dogs and 1 big dog. The big dog swallowed 5 small Kong's that were meant for the other dogs. We had to have them removed surgically. He almost died and the surgery was 6K.

If you have a strong chewer definitely go for the bla c k ones in any style. I have even put a couple banana chips in he peaaut butter. I heard of oatmeal or oats but havent tried it . need to

my trainer suggested a kong so I got one, Duke love's it I put peanut butter in his & when he gets done now he has started eating the kong itself. I didn't know about the black ones being strongest so thanks for the info I shall get one of those.

I've been making frozen kongs for my GSD for years. I just soak some of her regular kibble in water until it's mushy, drain the excess water off and mix it with either baby food, apple sauce or peanut butter. Something to add to the yumminess factor, that doesn't have a whole of of things I wouldn't generally want her to have, and that I probably have in the house already anyway.

Thanks, after reading all this, and my dog can't have yogurt, cheese, sweet potatos.etc. I have just soaked food and peanut butter..but like the baby food idea using vegies.. or sardines, tuna work too

Thanks for the idea (soaking kibble in water), my GSP has stomach sensitivity issues so I am limited to what I can put in his Kong - however, he needs something to do if crated for a short time. I plan to now mix the soaked kibble with a tablespoon of dog meat (that I know he can tolerate in small amounts), and then freeze it... what fun we have keeping our dogs happy!

This is a great idea! Simple and not calorie laden! We are getting a lab pup tomorrow, this will do the trick instead of any kind of bones for chewing! Thank you so much for sharing!

Love the kongs! There are places my dogs can't reach inside. How do you get them clean? Do you run them through the dishwasher?

I usually heat up a bunch of water in a tea kettle and soak the kong in a bowl with the hot water for about 30 minutes. I don't know that it gets every morsel off, but it definitely makes me feel as though it has been sanitized.

I throw them in the dishwasher after soaking in the boiling water

they can be cleaned in the dishwasher

I use wooden skewers, they reach in good to clean left over parts.

I use a baby bottle brush....and the dishwasher. Works great!

My dog can't get to all the places in the Kong either. Once he has gotten everything he can (and spent more time chewing trying to get it out), I bang the Kong on the floor to get the rest out. If some food is still stuck, I use a chopstick to push it out. It is a nice relationship building activity for us.
It may also be that your dog needs a smaller or softer Kong (senior if you have the red, red if you have the black) so he can chew on it and get all the food out. My dog is a heavy chewer though, so he needs a black in a size larger to keep him from just chewing off the small end.

I mix plain yougart, canned pumpkin with some kibble. To clean, I didn't want the rubber to absorb the detergent. I run them in the dishwasher, with the other dog chew toys, using only white vinegar, baking sode and high temps

They make special Kong brushes too.

A toothbrush and hot soapy water does the trick for cleaning. I use a table knife to get the last bits out and it is a great relationship building activity!

I bought a wire baby bottle cleaner in the dollar store.I use it in hot,soapy water,rinse,and then soak in boiling water.It gets the little particles out

I run mine thru the dish washer and I also have a baby bottle and nipple brush that works good. Hope this helps.

Hi Hannah!! Can you tell me what kind if glucosamine you bought and how you add it? (How much how many times a day) I have one that's really getting stiff and sore, and some days are harder than others for him to move.

I also have my sheltie on glucosamine n I just buy the tablet...the vet told me that her body will only use the amount she needs and then will get rid of it. No worries of over dose. Just so if u can't find the powder.

Turmeric is an incredible joint helper. Start slow. 110 lb. Weim gets jusdt under 1/8 c. With olive oil to help it stick to his food twice a day.. Gobbles it down!

How about all natural unsweetened applesauce, or scrambled eggs, or just some of their kibble soaked in water to make it mushy?

I also have a dog with dairy problems and I soak some kibble till its soft and mix different things in , like peanut butter , baby food (so many verities) ,liver or bacon treats , My boy is small , a Tibetan Spaniel , 16 lbs , so I brake the treats in small pieces . With my GSD ' s I didn't break them. I've done this for years . Besides the Kong I've used large beef leg bones , boiled to completely clean them. We were farmers and butchered our beef for the freezer .

I give my 10 yr old male pit w/ arthritis a beef flavored pill w/ glucosamine & MSM every morning w/ breakfast. What a difference!! Nutramax makes it & I buy off Amazon.

I often use broth (or leftover cooking liquids) with kibble. Or even just water plus kibble. If my dogs have chewable or sprinkle vitamins they go in the Kong too.

Won't some of these get all over the carpet? I usually just do peanut butter.

I put a small piece of fruit in first to cover the little opening. grape blueberry.. since its frozen it stays in place pretty good till the end when she can break it loose.

Never feed grapes or anything made from grapes to your dog, as few as 5 or 6 can cause renal failure in some dogs, why take the risk?

This sounds like a really good idea. I won't give my dogs yogurt. All yogurt has soy in it and I won't eat it either so using this idea I will try some goodies that I think are good for them. Also, peanuts are no longer good for any of us anymore either so I am on to figure out some fun new ideas to try this with. Could use almond butter maybe. Thanks much

I've used ASTRO Bio-Best natural yogurt for over 15 yrs., all my dogs are senior seniors and they have thrived. No soy. Limited ingredients. Only two to three table spoons once a day or so. Can purchase atany Safeway etc.

Natural live organic yoghurt made with goats milk can be given to dogs with dairy intolerance & natural live organic yoghurt contains no soya, natural yoghurt is made from milk & culture not soya.

I give my shepherd/huskie mix a daily probiotic...wondering if that with the yogurt would be ok.

Many of us cannot afford "organic" or what companies pass off as such to profit. We do what we can

Potatoes are an ingredient in some good-quality dog foods so it must be okay. My dog always shows up when I'm cutting up potatoes to boil. He loves them.

I worry about leaving out milk products.
How long do you leave the dog with these?
Are they frozen?

Ai used to freeze my prepared kongs... Turns out they break a lot faster. noon frozen kongs least over 6 months here. Frozen... 3 weeks at most

I have no problems with the food getting on the carpet. It's frozen the whole time my dogs are licking it out. I wash the Kongs in the dishwasher...I don't use the dry cycle, so the rubber hasn't dried out.

Even without freezing it isnt really messy. I trained my dog to eat it o his dged in the living room.someties a little Peanut Butter may get k n it and he likes it off and if need be I wash the dog bed cover. Not so bad

My boys love plain Greek yogurt mixed with either natural peanut butter or pumpkin with a bit of local honey mixed in.

I saw my lab getting frustrated with stuck pieces so I held it up in the air and dropped it on the open end and pieces popped out. That was all it took for him to learn. He now gets up on the ottoman and drops Kong to the floor and gets all the goodies.

I buy joint supplements at vitacost.com, best place I have found. Used to use Cosequin DS, now have found that Pet Naturals of Vermont Hip & Joint has same ingredients much cheaper. We stuff our kongs with butternut squash & brown rice with a little peanut butter or banana. We also stuff the old chewed marrow bones (still raw) with the same mixture & freeze lots of them at a time. I stand them on end in a casserole and fill & freeze. With 4 dogs, that gives them a treat every day!

How do I make the cheesy potato pie? After I boil the potatoes, do I mash everything together into a separate boil then freeze it in rolls that I can shove into the kong?

if you have a very strong dog that like mine can chew threw a red Kong there are black ones at most pet stores that are much stronger for these types of dogs.

I love these!! Is there a substitute for cottage cheese or yogurt, though? Maybe cream cheese? Or would that be the wrong consistency or too fatty?

Just want to share....our Shepherd mix has had the same puppy kong since he was little and he's 9 yrs old now!! He's a ferocious chewer with other things, but has never even bitten a chunk out of kong. I haven't tried freezing it, but I do stuff it with small milkbones mixed with peanut butter sometimes and he really loves it. He even brings me his empty kong and asks me to put something in it for him......LOL

Always have frozen the Kong! I put a small piece of carrot in the bottom so nothing falls out. Then a small amount of peanut butter and then the rest pumpkin. Peanut butter is "fattening" so we don't put a lot in,

Lucea, I use an old yogurt pot to stand the Kong in whilst filling it and then place everything in the freezer....none spillages or leaks!

My 13 yr old dog has kidney issues and is on a special diet. Should I skip the dairy products since they have protein? What about coconut? I see a variety of opinions about diet. He definitely seems better on his new food, but I hate that I don't have many treat options. This will be fab for him!

Don't forget to rinse the kong under the tap after taking it out of the freezer. The tongue can stick to it!

My dog gets a Kong filled with berries, fresh veggies and a small meat treat all sealed in with a swipe of peanut butter when we're leaving the house. He almost never needs to be told to "go crate" when he sees me preparing his Kong!

Of the 7 recipes, #'s 3, 4, & 5 seemed to have the ingredients mixed up - Cheesy Potato Pie doesn't have any potatoes in it, but the next one Peanut Butter and Cheese does have potatoes but no peanut butter, same for Peanut Butter Yogurt Bites - no peanut butter...???

I never thought about adding pumpkin...good idea! My dog loves carrots. Carrots and peanut butter are his favorites.

I put canned dog food in the Kong and freeze. If you don’t get the Kong brand Kong, make sure there is an air hole in the opposite end that you fill
I’ve also mixed cream cheese with leftover meat from dinner, fill the Kong and freeze

You need to specify about ONLY using a peanut butter WITHOUT Xlitol in your recipes. Many people do not realize that it is very harmful to a dog.

I’ve read articles about how Kong dog chew toys are unsafe!! A dogs tongue can swell within the Kong because of all the licking. Once the dogs tongue swells, the dog then suffocates!!! The above treats look great but please don’t put them in a Kong, for your dogs sake!! Don’t buy one, they can be a killer!!!
